Wyre is a local government district and borough in Lancashire, in the North West England. As of mid-2014 the district has a population of 108,742. The majority of this population is found in the large towns of Poulton-le-Fylde and Fleetwood, which have populations of 18,495 and 25,939 respectively, however there are a number of other parishes with reasonable sized populations. Poulton-le-Fylde is also the home of the districts administrative headquarters.
Like many British government districts, Wyre was formed on the 1st April 1974 through a merger of the municipal borough of Fleetwood with the Poulton-le-Fylde, Preesall, Garstang and the Thornton-Cleveleys urban districts and other various rural districts.
Being the largest towns in the borough, Fleetwood and Poulton-le-Fylde act as the economic hubs for the area. Poulton acts as the industrial hub for the area, showing particular prosperity during the industrial revolution which allowed the town to be what it is today.
Fleetwood's economy is centered much more around the fishing and tourism industry, as well as port activity and light industry, due to its coastal location. It has a pier and also two prominent retail locations which support its tourist industry.
In terms of transport, Poulton provides the main railway station in the area, with frequent services to Manchester Piccadilly, York, Manchester Victoria, Leeds, Liverpool Lime Street and Carlisle amongst others.
Poulton is also just 13 miles from the M6 motorway, and is connected to it via the M55. there are also A roads providing access to towns such as Fleetwood, Blackpool, Preston, Garstang and Lancaster.
