Cannock Chase is a local government district in Staffordshire, in the West Midlands. As of mid-2014, the district has a population of 98,549. It covers a large portion of the Cannock Chase Forest, as well as the towns of Cannock, Rugeley and Hednesford, which have populations of 29,018, 22,724 and 17,343 respectively. The town of Cannock is also home to the district's administrative HQ.
Like many British government districts, Cannock Chase was formed on the 1st April 1974 through a merger of the Cannock and Rugeley urban districts, and Brindley Heath from Lichfield Rural District.
The district's larger settlements, such as Cannock, acts as the economic hubs. Cannock is primarily a retail centre, with a diverse high street, multiple retail parks and a shopping centre. There are also a number of nightclubs, bars and pubs dotted around the town. The town also maintains a large leisure centre which contains a swimming pool amongst other sporting facilities.
Rugeley and Hednesford have similar facilities, and Hednesford's town centre is currently undergoing a £50m regeneration scheme. In Rugely there is also a leisure centre and modern swimming pool, as well as extensive retail services and employment opportunities- in 2011, Amazon opened a significantly large fulfillment centre, creating around 700-900 full time jobs.
In terms of transport, the area is very well connected. Again, towns such as Cannock, have very good transport facilities, such as its railway station. The station provides frequent services to the likes of Birmingham, Walsall and Rugeley, and connections can be made from these stations to reach other areas in the country.
