The Top Destinations for Brits Moving Abroad Revealed

  • Posted

Bird & Co has replicated a 2023 study to reveal which European countries are now attracting the most interest from UK residents considering relocating overseas.

With continued financial pressure on households across Britain, including rising property prices and ongoing cost-of-living challenges, many individuals are exploring opportunities beyond the UK. To understand where interest is strongest, we analysed Google search data over the past 12 months to identify the countries UK residents are most frequently researching as potential new homes.

The study examined the search term “moving to [country name] from UK” across 44 European countries. The results highlight the destinations generating the highest average monthly search volumes from UK users.

Based on average monthly search volume over the last 12 months, the most searched European countries are:

1Spain2,000
2Portugal1,100
3France900
4Switzerland800
5Ireland & Italy600
6Norway & Poland500

Why Is Spain the Most Popular Destination?

With an average of 2,000 searches per month, Spain ranks comfortably in first place.

Spain has long been a favourite among British expats, ranking as the top country to move to in the same study conducted in 2023. The latest data suggests its appeal remains stronger than ever. A combination of lifestyle, climate and affordability likely continues to attract interest from UK residents looking for a fresh start.

Spain’s property market remains attractive to overseas buyers, with a broad range of housing options from city apartments to coastal villas. Compared with parts of the UK, buyers may find greater value for money and more accessible entry points into homeownership.

The country offers a warm Mediterranean climate, extensive coastline and a relaxed pace of life that contrasts sharply with the UK’s colder, wetter weather. For many, this lifestyle shift alone can be a significant draw.

Together, lifestyle appeal and housing opportunities are likely driving Spain’s clear lead in relocation searches.

Portugal Takes Second Place

Portugal ranks second, with 1,100 average monthly searches from UK residents.

Interest in Portugal has continued to build in recent years, with average monthly search volumes rising from 800 in 2023 to 1,100 in 2026. Known for its sunny climate, beautiful beaches and welcoming culture, it offers both traditional and modern living.

The country’s relatively affordable living costs compared with parts of the UK may also be contributing to its popularity. From vibrant cities like Lisbon and Porto to quieter coastal regions in the Algarve, Portugal provides a variety of living environments to suit different preferences.

While property prices in Portugal have risen in recent years, they remain competitive compared with many parts of the UK, making it an appealing option for people weighing cost against lifestyle improvements.

France Remains a Firm Favourite

With 900 monthly searches on average, France holds third place.

France has historically been one of the most popular destinations for British nationals relocating abroad. It also ranked highly in our 2023 study, attracting 700 monthly searches, and the latest data shows it continues to draw growing interest.

Its proximity to the UK, established expat communities and diverse property market likely all contribute to its appeal. Prospective movers can choose between rural countryside homes, coastal retreats or bustling city apartments.

France’s strong cultural identity, renowned cuisine and accessible transport links may also make it an attractive and familiar option for UK residents seeking change without moving too far from home.

Switzerland Climbs to Fourth

Switzerland has climbed one place since our 2023 study and now ranks fourth, attracting 800 average monthly searches.

Known for its high quality of life, strong economy and stunning landscapes, Switzerland presents a different type of relocation opportunity. While it is often associated with higher living costs, it also offers competitive salaries, economic stability and a strong employment market.

For professionals and families seeking security, infrastructure and a well-established financial system, Switzerland’s appeal may lie in long-term stability and career prospects rather than lifestyle alone.

Ireland and Italy Share Fifth Place

Ireland and Italy both recorded an average of 600 monthly searches, placing them jointly in fifth position.

Ireland

Ireland’s shared language and cultural similarities with the UK may make it feel like a more accessible move for some British residents. Close geographical proximity and strong historical links also reduce the sense of relocation risk.

For individuals wishing to remain within a familiar cultural environment while still making a significant lifestyle change, Ireland presents an attractive option.

However, interest appears to have softened slightly in recent years. Having ranked second in 2023, Ireland has now fallen three places. This shift may reflect a number of factors. Rising living costs, particularly in cities such as Dublin, ongoing housing supply pressures, and increased competition in the rental market could be influencing decision-making.

Italy

Italy, on the other hand, offers a very different experience. With its warm climate, historic cities and varied regions - from countryside villages to cosmopolitan centres - Italy appeals to those seeking lifestyle enrichment and cultural immersion.

Property opportunities in certain regions may also be appealing to buyers looking for more space or character than they can find at home in the UK.

Interestingly, in contrast to Ireland’s decline in the rankings, Italy has edged up a couple of places since our 2023 study. This modest rise suggests a growing interest among British residents in destinations that offer a more distinct change in pace, climate and culture.
